The students thought this was very interesting as it allowed us to see which animals use their brains more. We will use this new to us technology to collect data on effectiveness and engagement. If proven to be effective, we will use funds to purchase our own equipment to incubate chickens instead of borrowing it from Great Kids Farm. Students also got to see enormous animals like the elephant, rhinoceros and many other huge animals that are familiar to students. During the event, the hosts dissected squid in front of the student while describing each of the body parts and its functions underwater. Grade-Level: 5th Activity Title: Leila Alieh (Neurobiologist) Subject: Brain Size Teacher(s): Thompson When: 12/11/2020 Number of Students: 25 Description: Dr. Alieh came to talk with our 5th graders about the trip to becoming a neurobiologist and how she works on the brains of different animals. The students thought this was very interesting as it allowed us to see which animals use their brains more. Students learned the importance of a diet and exercise, but also learned new games or activities they can do at home that are exciting for students. For example, students learned that one of their favorite games, tag, is fun and also a great cardio exercise to keep their heart healthy.

Eco-Squad Team Environmental Education
Grade-Level: 1-5 Activity Title: Eco-Squad Green Team Meetings Subject: Planning, Organizing and Implementing Projects for the School Teacher(s): Thompson When: Thursday Mornings 7:30-8:30 before school Number of Students: 10 or more Description: Members of the Eco-squad meet every Thursday to plan out events for the month and week. These can include recycling tasks, air quality assignments, gardening, events and programs that will be implemented or supported by our team. This team is comprised mainly of 4/5 students, but does have some representatives from the lower grade levels. These students are mainly responsible for keeping programs running and gathering support from the rest of the school. They also document many of the activities that we do.
Pre-K
Grade-Level : Pre- K Activity Title: The Pumpkin Patch Subject: Agricultural Science Teacher(s): Johnson, Wagner, Woolson When : October 15-19, 2018 Number of Students: 90 Description: All Pre-K students dissected pumpkins in class to understand how plants grow. They focused on comparing and contrasting different plant types to find similarities. The activities not only helped the students learn about the parts of the plant, but also what plants are used for human consumption. This activity was done during the fall when pumpkins are readily available. It was one of several activities that included a trip to a farm and various interactions with agricultural partners in Maryland. Such a fun week!
Kindergarten
Grade-Level: K Activity Title: The Warmth and Strength of the Sun Subject: Environmental Science Teacher(s): Thompson, Adams When: October 14, 2019 Number of Students: 36 Description: The Kindergarten class tested the strength of the sun by doing two hands on activities. They first heated up different types of materials such as sand, black rocks, white rocks and water. They tested with their hands and thermometers the different temperatures and made observations. They then applied this concept to the concept of growing plants that will be introduced later. They finally worked on the strength of the sun by placing objects on black paper and letting them sit in the sun. They were able to see sun shading spots and discuss why the sun is a powerful tool for many things.
Grade-Level : K Activity Title: Maryland Animal Diversity Subject: Science Teacher(s): Woolson, Sufrin, Wagner When : April 2018 Number of Students: 64 Description: Students in the Kindergarten classes focused on diversity of Maryland ecosystems. They began their studies by looking at types of animal habitats. They built models of different habitats and observed the behavioral characteristics of smaller animals that were available. As they continued, the students began examining specific aquatic ecosystems. They focused on the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem as it was the closest and most diverse habitat available. Resources for this type of habitat were also readily available for use in Baltimore City. The students continued by growing their own plants and also keeping a simple journal of animals in the area. All the activities involved in this lesson were crucial for the students' understanding of environmental issues and human involvement in ecosystem conservation.
First Grade
Grade-Level: 1st Activity Title: Great Kids Farm Virtual Visit Subject: Green Teacher(s): Thompson When: November 14, 2019 3:30-4:30 after school Number of Students: 10 Description: The first grade students worked with GREAT KIDS FARM to do a virtual field trip to the farm. The farm representative used Skype to give the kids a tour of the facility and the barn. The students went through different aspects of gardening and the needs of a greenhouse. The session ended with the students being able to ask questions in a Q/A session with the leaders of the farm.
Grade-Level : First Grade Activity Title: Air Quality Education Subject: Environmental Science Teacher(s): Ndati When : April 13, 2018 Number of Students: 32 Description: Air Quality lessons were taught to the entire first grade student body. Teachers utilized before and after supplemental plans to help student learn to read and write through the scope of environmental issues. During the lesson students read a short story about air quality. The story was called "Air Pollution! How to Limit the Pollution of the Environment for Kids", by Baby IQ Builder Books. They used reading strategies to find the main idea of the reading and to pronounce unknown words. They used this activity to boost English Language Arts (ELA) skills while at the same time learning content through the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) standards. Our students enjoyed this activity significantly.
Second Grade

Students were able to learn about animal adaptations and interesting life cycle information. This event was held in our gymnasium as our auditorium is not currently available. This was such an inspiring event and engaged our students on a level that usually would be hard to maintain. We thoroughly enjoyed this program and hope to partner with the Baltimore Zoo in the future. As a follow up activity, students created their own make-believe animals with adaptations to inspire both their artistic side as well as their imagination.

A great way to demonstrate this concept is to examine the same species and identify differences between them. The students learned about the different characteristics of animals by creating their own versions of them. They used many survival adaptations to create interesting creatures that can survive the odds. Way to go!

Grade-Level: Third Grade Activity Title: Birch Tree Variation Subject: Art Teacher(s): Green When: November 14, 2018 Number of Students: 32 Description: The fourth grade team examined variation in a population. A great way to demonstrate this concept is to examine the same species and identify differences between them. Our Art department is amazing at just this technique. The students learned about the different characteristics of birch trees. They then created their own images with negative space paintings and examined how many changes could be made.
Fourth Grade
Grade-Level: Fourth Grade Activity Title: Renewable Energy Subject: Science Teacher(s): Wright When: November 15, 2018 Number of Students: 48 Description: Students used batteries, wire and tape to learn about electricity. The students built their own energy circuits in class and used the man made resources to discuss natural resources in the real-world. This discussion lead to talks of renewable energy and limited resources. Students discussed the breakdown of a battery and what these chemicals would do to the environment. As a follow up activity, the students listened to a speaker from a wind energy company and asked questions about wind as an energy source. The next step is to examine other types of renewable energy sources.
Fifth Grade
Grade-Level: 5th Grade Activity Title: Eat Well Be Well Lunch Bunch Subject: Nutrition and Composting Teacher(s): Bankins, Conner, Thompson When: March 2020 Number of Students: 25 Description: Students ate lunch together and discussed the importance of nutrition, a healthy diet and how we can compost to make our garden better. We are continuing to make a composted garden by planting old veggies and seeing if we can get them to grow. This is the next step for the Eat Well Be Well Lunch Bunch.
Grade-Level: 5th Grade Activity Title: Subject: Nutrition and Bacteria Teacher(s): Bankins When: November 2018 Number of Students: 32 Description: Students made yogurt in class after a discussion of healthy flora in the intestinal lining. They discussed bacteria as a living organism outside of the body and compared it to organisms inside the body. The students made homemade yogurt to discuss the anaerobic breakdown of carbohydrates in the body. They also practiced naming some common bacteria by shape. Students are unimpressed by the taste of homemade yogurt! Extra ingredients were added to the recipe to ensure a fun and tasty learning environment for all students.
Sixth Grade
Grade-Level: Sixth Activity Title: Air Quality and Our Lungs Subject: Science Teacher(s): Bankins When: December 5, 2018 Number of Students: 32 Students worked on determining what happens to the body when it functions normally versus with environmental challenges. This lesson used the lungs as an example and determined what happens to the lungs when a person is breathing poor quality air. The students designed their own experiments to test how much air and pollution is inhaled in a visual way. They used household products as lung pollutants and recorded before/ after images of the final product. They also focused on the physiological reactions within the lungs when this process occurred. They were able to relate this material to everyday life to help send a message to the community about negative health choices.
TGrade-Level: 6th, 7th, and 8th Activity Title: NorthBay Adventure Trip Subject: Outdoor Adventure and Education Teacher(s): Yorkshire, Thompson When: February 26 - March 2, 2018; February 11 - February 15, 2019 Number of Students: 100, 60 Description: NorthBay is an environmental education center located one hour north of Baltimore on the Chesapeake Bay and our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students attended in both 2018 and 2019. Students studied science in an exciting and hands-on outdoor setting where there is also a focus on adventure, life skills, and character development. On average students spent 75% of their class time outside. Students experienced multiple learning and adventure opportunities which included, but were not limited to: kayaking, canoeing, bird watching, hiking, arts and crafts, sporting events, wet labs, giant swing, game room, gymnasium, ziplines, high ropes course, climbing walls, and aquariums. This experience not only taught the students a lot of science, it gave them experience with peer mentors to help cope with life skills. These were truly educational and life changing trips. Thank you to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Trust Mini-Grant Program for supporting our trip!
Seventh Grade
Grade-Level: 7th Grade Activity Title: Great Kids Farm Outdoor Education Trip Subject: Gardening, Beekeeping and Green Food Preparation Teacher(s): Yorkshire, Thompson When: April 7, 2018 Number of Students: 60 Description: All 7th grade students attended the Great Kids Farm field trip. On this trip to the 33-acre farm owned by Baltimore City Public Schools, students learned about how to garden different micro-greens. Students also learned beekeeping from staff at the farm and recorded observations about bees at the farm. Finally, students learned composting and made composting logs with instructors. Information obtained at this event lead our students to install indoor composting bins in the classroom.
Grade-Level: 7th Grade Activity Title: Environmental Christmas Caroling Subject: Various Green Topics Teacher(s): Pennie When: December 12, 2018 Number of Students: 10 Description: A group of 7th grade students created NEW versions of Christmas and Holiday Carols to sing to other classes. To accomplish this task, students took previous versions of songs and manipulated the lyrics to discuss green issues. An example lyric is included in this documentation. Students decided to do this type of education because it not only went with the holiday season, but it entertained and increased student engagement in the environmental concerns of the school. The environmental issues discussed in these songs not only reached our students, but also the school community. Note: songs were adapted from versions created in the New Yorker.
Grade-Level: 7th Grade Activity Title: "The Tree and Me" Diversity Painting Subject: Art Teacher(s): Green When: November 15, 2018 Number of Students: 60 Description: Students used real life tree descriptions to make their own artistic representation of different tree species. They were able to isolate key characteristics of each type of tree in their rendition. In addition, they used dichotomous keys on each other's paintings to determine what species they were. This was a very interesting activity solely completed in the Art class and provided a very solid example of transdiciplinary instruction.
Eighth Grade
Grade-Level: 8th Grade Activity Title: Nutrition Subject: Science Teacher(s): Yorkshire, Thompson, When: April 7, 2017 Number of Students: 60 Description: All 8th grade students were visited by business owner and fitness professional, Virginia K. Kinkel. Known best for her body building competitions, this BodyMass Gym owner spent the morning teaching our 8th grade about how important nutrition is for the body and where our food comes from. The students examined the meaning of fair-trade and organic. They played a guessing game between grocery store and farmers market food. They also had a question and answer session which lead to these amazing flexing pictures.
Grade-Level: 8th Grade Activity Title: Hot Skates Subject: Physics of the Earth Teacher(s): Yorkshire, Thompson, When: April 11, 2019 Number of Students: 60 Description: The middle schools students took a trip to Hot Skates to learn about the principles of physics through fun STEM education. Students learned about force and the push/pull of gravity. The earth plays an amazing role in our survival and how we react to it. Most of all, fun science concepts were incorporated into everyday life...even if it put some of them on their rear ends! What a fantastic day!
